Sao Tome Fights Cholera Outbreak With Help From UNICEF

A cholera outbreak that has grown worse in recent weeks has spurred the United Nations Children's Educational Fund (UNICEF) to help stem the outbreak, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.

The endemic poverty blamed for the conditions that generated the cholera outbreak in Sao Tome is ironic, in that the government is now able to sign awards documents that would result in an immediate infusion of tens of millions of dollars in cash, but the signing is snagged in a political dispute that ultimately may be costing Sao Tomese children their lives.

Here is the Lusa story:

Sao Tome: UNICEF sends medical supplies to fight cholera outbreak

Geneva, May 10 (Lusa) - The United Nations children's fund, UNICEF, is sending medical supplies to Sao Tome and Principe to help tackle a cholera epidemic.

UNICEF officials confirmed Tuesday that 74 cholera cases have been confirmed in Sao Tome and three people have died since the disease broke out last month.

The UN agency said it was particularly worried at the fact that most of Sao Tome's 140,000-odd population lives within a 10 km radius of the cholera outbreak.

UNICEF said it is sending drugs and hospital equipment worth over euros 40,000 in addition to material to raise awareness of the dangers of the cholera spreading.

"We cannot underestimate the extremely dangerous strength of this disease", said the UN agency's communiqué.

Portugal and Nigeria are among countries to have already responded to an appeal by the Sao Tome authorities for assistance to fight the cholera outbreak.

Hey anonymous 4:00 PM, (aka Walldog)

I am embarrased to hold the same stock as you. You are obviously not mature enough to handle the fluctuations that occur with this stock. So please do all of us normal investors a favor and sell your shares.

Forget about the stock market and go play some Playstation or watch some MTV. Thats more your speed. You have the mind of a 12 year old.

You make this stock look like an amateurish stock with your constant whining and complaining and name calling.

Your not mature enough to handle news so you want to be spoon fed only news you like. What a baby you are.

Please refrain from posting. Some of your comments yesterday on RB yesterday were downright rude and embarrasing and I can tell you you dont speak for the majority of us ERHE shareholders.

Maybe the opposition party in Sao Tome wants to drag this out as far as possible knowing that elections are only a year away.

The longer they drag the process out, the less the likelihood of any major oil discoveries occuring before the election.

Oil discoveries before the election would make Menenez look good and would probably secure his re-election because he chose oil revenues over higher signature bonus payments.

Whereas if no oil discoveries occur before the election then it makes it look like the opposition part was right and that higher signature bonuses were the right way to go.

Bottom line: All of this stalling hurts Menenes and helps the opposition party.
